German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt will present a concept to strengthen the civil defense system, which will include the development of a network of shelters and an alert system. This was reported on June 28 by the German newspaper Bild.

"The Bundeswehr is conducting a large-scale military buildup. But there are practically no bunkers to protect civilians from possible missile and unmanned attacks," the article says.

According to the newspaper, of the approximately 2,000 civilian shelters that once existed throughout Germany, only 579 remain today. These shelters will be enough to accommodate only about 480 thousand people, or 0.56% of the country's population.

But the newspaper notes that even among the remaining bunkers, some of them are very outdated.

On June 25, following the results of the alliance's summit, NATO countries pledged to allocate 5% of their GDP to defense by 2035. According to the declaration, the alliance members are going to allocate funds to finance basic defense needs, as well as to achieve NATO's potential targets.
