Slovakia will suffer more than other EU countries from a possible decision to abandon gas imports from Russia. This was stated on June 28 by the Prime Minister of the Republic Robert Fico on the Sobotné dialógy program broadcast by radio station Rádio Slovensko.

"We will be the most affected country [after the supply shutdown]," he stressed, calling such EU plans "a shot in our own knee" and "another harmful ideological decision due to the obsession with Russia."

According to Fico, the European Commission (EC) recognizes Bratislava's concerns, and Slovakia's position has already been communicated to the EC.

Commenting on the situation in Ukraine, the Prime Minister noted that after the last meeting of the European Council, he did not see the EU's desire to seek an early end to the conflict.

On June 26, Fico stressed that sanctions against a country like Russia are not working. He stressed that the sanctions policy makes sense precisely when it really has an impact.
