Before the onset of cold weather in summer, the crop beds should be covered with a thick cloth to protect them. Nikita Chaplin, a State Duma deputy and chairman of the Union of Summer Residents of the Moscow region, told about this on Saturday, June 28.
He explained that the current weather conditions are quite rare for the beginning of summer and can cause damage to heat-loving crops. At the same time, with timely measures, the crop can be protected.
"First of all, it is necessary to cover the plants with non-woven fabric, for example, spunbond or agrotextile. Even ordinary burlap or thick fabric can help, the main thing is to provide frost protection," Chaplin said "Газете.Ru ".
He specified that this is especially important for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and other crops. At the same time, the deputy clarified that before the onset of cold weather, it is necessary to carry out evening watering of the beds, as well as cover the roots of plants with sawdust or straw.
"Moist soil retains heat better, which reduces the risk of freezing of the root system. But it's important not to overdo it — excess water can do harm," Chaplin added.
For shrubs and young trees, you can use mulching of the root zone with peat, sawdust or straw — this will create additional thermal insulation. In addition, if possible, the seedlings can be wrapped up completely, concluded the chairman of the Union of Summer residents of the Moscow region.
On June 11, Chaplin said that the optimal time for strawberry transplanting is the end of summer or the beginning of autumn. According to him, the heat subsides during this period, so plants tolerate stress more easily.
