- In Kazakhstan, the population of saigas causing serious damage to farmland will be reduced

The Kazakh authorities have decided to regulate the number of saiga antelopes, which cause catastrophic damage to agricultural land. This was announced on June 28 by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic Yerlan Nysanbayev during a meeting with farmers and peasant farms of the West Kazakhstan region.
"Based on scientific findings, farmers' proposals and the worldwide practice of regulating individual species, a decision has been made to regulate the number of saigas," he was quoted on the ministry's website as saying.
According to the publication, the growing saiga population may paralyze agricultural activities. It is noted that farmers are also sounding the alarm against the background of what is happening. According to the agrarians, in some areas the damage caused by trampling crops and pastures amounts to hundreds of millions of tenge.
Alzhan Shamshidin, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Vice-rector of Zhangir Khan State Medical University, also stressed that the situation requires intervention based on scientific data. He noted that at current saiga population densities, both animals and humans are suffering. The expert called population regulation a scientifically sound tool that does not imply species reduction.
The head of Rosprirodnadzor, Svetlana Radionova, in an interview with Izvestia on June 19, ruled out the danger in the Russian Federation against the background of mass migration of saigas. She stressed that a large number of individuals had moved to the country on their own, and clarified that many people found such an "escape" unfavorable.
Radionova also noted that work is currently underway to review the requirements of the Red Book. According to her, measures such as population regulation are extremely necessary to prevent negative consequences for agriculture and ensure harmonious coexistence with nature.
