The first power unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant (NPP) in Turkey is scheduled to be commissioned within a year. This was announced on June 28 by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak to the Turkish Anadolu agency.

The Deputy Prime Minister commented on the results of the work of the joint Russian-Turkish intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation, which met in Moscow on June 27.

"I think the first unit of the station will be put into operation in the near future, within a year. We attach special importance to the implementation of this project. For us, this is a key project in the field of cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and peaceful atom," Novak said.

He added that the construction of Akkuyu is proceeding according to the established schedule. Russia will also be happy to participate in the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Turkey. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, experts are currently studying the economic feasibility of this project.

In addition, Russia intends to expand cooperation with Turkey on oil and gas supplies. Novak noted that Moscow has sent significant amounts of oil and coal to Ankara, besides, Turkey is a transit country for supplies to Southeastern Europe.

On May 28, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that during his visit to Moscow, he had discussed with the Russian side the difficulties associated with financing the construction of the Akkuyu NPP. According to him, these problems are largely caused by anti-Russian sanctions. Fidan noted that Turkey is an exporter of industrial products, and it needs energy resources.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on May 27 that Russian President Vladimir Putin had confirmed Moscow's determination to promote joint projects with Ankara, despite attempts to hinder cooperation.
