Goalkeeper of the Red Army hockey club Pyotr Andreyanov became the only hockey player from Russia who was selected in the first round of the 2025 National Hockey League (NHL) draft. The event was held in Los Angeles on June 28. Information about this was published on the official website of the league on June 28.

The Russian goalkeeper was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey club with the 20th overall number.

"Andreyanov is a bit amazing as the first goalie off the board, but he has the kind of athleticism and aggressiveness that could put him on the path to becoming an NHL starter," the NHL website states.

In the 2024/25 season, the 18-year-old Russian played in 37 matches for the Red Army in the Youth Hockey League (MHL) with a 94.2 rebound percentage. In the playoffs, he played 3 games with a 95.3 percent deflected shot, and in the playoffs, he played 3 games with a 90.9 percent, Sport-Express adds.

On June 25, Russian basketball player Egor Demin was selected number eight by the Brooklyn Nets at the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, which took place in New York. This draft was the first in the history of the NBA when a player from Russia was selected in the top ten.
