The Yerevan court has arrested Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan for two months. His lawyer Ara Zohrabyan announced this on Saturday, June 28.

"The court granted the investigation's request [for arrest]. The decision is illegal and unjustified," he said. The defender's speech was broadcast on the YouTube channel NEWS AM.

According to the lawyer, the defense plans to appeal the court's decision.

Ajapakhyan was detained on June 27. The Investigative Committee of Armenia has opened a criminal case against him on calls to overthrow the government in the country.

Before that, there was a scuffle between police officers and priests near the residence of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II. It was clarified that the security forces tried to detain Ajapakhyan, but believers and priests did not allow him to be taken away.
