Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan initiated the detention of Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan for political reasons. This was stated on June 28 by the former Ombudsman of Armenia Arman Tatoyan.

"The Prime Minister of Armenia openly shows that he leads and gives instructions to law enforcement agencies. The church is currently under severe pressure," he told Izvestia correspondent Ivan Litomin.

The priest is currently in the courtroom. At the request of the defense, the hearing was postponed for 2.5 hours.

It is also reported about the increase in the number of security forces who are standing in a cordon outside the building. In turn, Ajapakhyan's supporters are located on the other side and are awaiting the start of the court session.

Ajapakhyan was detained on June 27. The Investigative Committee of Armenia has opened a criminal case against him on calls to overthrow the government in Armenia.

Before that, there was a scuffle between police officers and priests near the residence of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II. It was clarified that the security forces tried to detain Ajapakhyan, but the believers and priests did not allow him to be taken away.

On the same day, Ajapakhyan refused to run for the post of Prime Minister of Armenia.
