A possible split is brewing in the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) due to disagreements over relations with the Russian Federation and the rearmament of Germany. This was reported on June 27 by the Financial Times newspaper.

"Disagreements within the Social Democratic Party of Germany on issues of rearmament and relations with the Russian Federation should reach a climax at the congress on Friday due to the fact that the party's leader and finance minister Lars Klingbeil is facing a negative reaction from the old guard of the party," the article says.

Peter Brandt, the son of former German Chancellor Willy Brandt, noted in an interview with the FT that many in the ranks of the SPD consider the perception of the alleged Russian threat to be an exaggeration. He also pointed out that Klingbeil approved a new round of defense spending, "without checking whether this is really the line of the majority of members."

"A party rebellion could create problems for Klingbeil," the newspaper concludes.

On June 10, Stern magazine reported on the desire of some members of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) to start negotiations with Russia. The authors of the manifesto "Ensuring Peace in Europe through defense capability, arms control and mutual understanding" see negotiations with the Russian Federation as an alternative to the rearmament of the Bundeswehr.

In turn, the leader of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice party, Sarah Wagenknecht, supported this initiative. She expressed the hope that all forces in Germany would strive to revive a strong peace movement.
