Bathing in fresh water can lead to health problems, Daria Ponomareva, a dermatovenerologist at the Medscan Hadassah clinic, said on Friday, June 27.

"One of the common problems is "bather's itch" or cercariosis, which is manifested by itching, redness and a rash on the skin. This is due to contact with cercariae, larvae of trematodes that live in stagnant water, especially in ponds and lakes with waterfowl," Ponomareva said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

To reduce the risk of infection, you should only swim in proven places, and it is also recommended to use repellents. After bathing, you should definitely take a shower and change into dry clothes, the dermatovenerologist noted.

Poisoning with cyanobacteria toxins, which can multiply in standing water, is another danger, the doctor added.

"Intestinal disorders can also occur when bathing. Infections caused by E. coli, shigella, and viruses can lead to vomiting and diarrhea, especially in children. A doctor's consultation is necessary if the symptoms persist or there are signs of dehydration," Ponomareva said.

She also advised to avoid swallowing water to reduce the risk of infection.

The expert recommended that Russians avoid ponds with blooming water, large numbers of birds and suspicious water conditions, do not swim after heavy rains and near watering places for livestock.

According to the doctor, information about safe reservoirs can be found on the websites of Rospotrebnadzor.

In turn, dermatologist Yulia Gallyamova clarified that the most common place of infection with cercariasis are stagnant reservoirs. We are talking about lakes, swamps, and wild beaches where Rospotrebnadzor did not take a water sample. 360.ru .
