Masked special forces of the National Security Service (NSS) entered the residence of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II in Etchmiadzin. This was reported by Sputnik Armenia on June 27.
Earlier it was reported that police surrounded the building of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Gyumri, and searches were conducted there. It is noted that law enforcement officers want to detain Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan.
"All Armenian clergy are ready to be arrested. We are all in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin," Hieromonk Asoghik Karapetyan wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
On June 26, it was reported that another criminal case was opened in Armenia against a clergyman — the person involved was Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan, head of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The reason was the archbishop's public statements about the political situation in the country.
On June 25, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, leader of the opposition movement "Holy Struggle", and 14 other people, his supporters, were detained in Armenia as part of a criminal case on an "attempt to seize power." On June 26, Galstanyan was arrested for two months.
