- Scientists have created a fast algorithm for calculating antennas for mobile devices

The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology has developed a new software method for quickly calculating configurations of patch antennas - small plates that are used for wireless communication in devices.
The algorithm is based on the use of a "training copy", during the development of which a limited amount of accurate data is included in the program. Based on them, a computational model is being created that takes into account only the basic patterns.
"At the start, the algorithm takes a basic rectangular antenna and, with each test, slightly changes it — cuts out some areas, tracking the effect of the changes. If the reception has improved, then the form is suitable, if not, then the previous form is returned. This is how the program selects the effective antenna shape itself. This approach reduces the computational load, since only a small number of parameters are optimized at each step, and not the entire structure at once," Maxim Artyushin, the author of the project, a technician at the Department of Applied Research and development of advanced cellular communication solutions at MIPT, told Izvestia.
According to him, the algorithm has versatility. It can be adapted for a wide range of tasks, from antennas for household Wi—Fi routers to complex high-tech systems.
At the same time, the proposed method makes it possible to design receiving and transmitting devices with non-standard geometry, which can improve their performance in difficult conditions. For example, when moving quickly, which is important for flying drones, or when working in low-Earth orbits, which is important for spacecraft.
