- Szijjarto declared the inadmissibility of Ukraine's accession to the EU without the consent of the Europeans

The decision on Ukraine's admission to the European Union (EU) should not be made by the Ukrainian authorities, but by citizens of the member states of the association. This was announced on June 26 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
"Dear Ukrainian colleagues, the situation is this: it is not you, not President [of Ukraine Vladimir] Zelensky, not the Ukrainian government who decide to join the European Union, but we, the citizens of the European Union, including Hungarians," Szijjarto wrote, commenting on statements by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine that the Hungarian people have no right to decide on Ukraine's accession. in the EU.
He stressed that Budapest opposes integration with the state, which, in his words, "poses a threat to war, jeopardizes energy security and harms Hungarian farmers."
Szijjarto also expressed disappointment with Kiev's position on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. According to him, the Ukrainian authorities have been "systematically taking away the rights" of the Hungarian community for 10 years.
In addition, Szijjarto criticized the behavior of individual representatives of the European Parliament, who, as he put it, "run around in Brussels in T-shirts with Ukrainian flags," thereby misleading the public about the mood within the EU.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on June 24 that Ukraine should not be accepted into the EU and NATO, as this decision would lead to a war between Western countries and Russia. He clarified that it was in Hungary's security interests not to become part of a common integration structure with Kiev.
