For those who prefer adrenaline to fun, the police detective "Ballar" and the crime drama "Dexter" are waiting.: Resurrection" and the thriller "Indomitable", shot in the impressive natural scenery of Yosemite National Park. Izvestia reports on the premieres of television series in July.
"Theater zone"
Kion, July 1st
The director of the Tula Youth Theater slightly overdid the special effects during the premiere and for his creative rage received a very real sentence on charges of arson of the theater. However, he has a way to get out early — all he needs to do is put Romeo and Juliet in the colony's club by prisoners and guards. The new—found actors do not understand what is required of them at first, but then, captured by the great power of art, they are wholeheartedly drawn into what is happening. Moreover, the director's brilliant idea to portray two warring clans by the forces of two eternally opposing groups — prisoners and guards — gives both a lot of opportunities for creative expression. So there will be a premiere, even if the colony burns down, and the most savvy inmates use the hype about the unusual production to prepare an escape behind it.
Anecdotes about how a released ex-prisoner inadvertently demonstrates the depth of his knowledge of life by getting a job as an educator, watchman or conductor have long been loved by the people. Their fans will undoubtedly be delighted by the "Theater Zone": the fantasy of the anecdoters has not yet reached the convict actor, who, under the pretext of rehearsing for the hundredth time, throws a work glove in the face of a turntable. So, representatives of two warring brigades (Mon-cons and Cop-uletti) are creating havoc and mayhem, proving to the whole world that there is no sadder epic in the world than the story of Romeo and Juliet, which is a delight for fans of this genre. The main thing is not to let people with higher philological education near the blue screens: I will be a creep, a fatal outcome is possible.
"Eterna"
Kinopoisk, July 5th
The series takes place in a world called Curtiana. A coup d'etat took place in the largest and most influential state of Curtiana, Taliga. Now the usurpers are in power — the Ollar dynasty. The rightful heir to the throne, Aldo Rakan, is forced to flee and is now hiding in the city-state of Agaris, where the possessed head of the local church is in power. The heir of Taliga now has only one path — to return home, overthrow the Ollars and regain the throne that rightfully belongs to him.
The attempt by Russian cinematographers to create their own "Game of Thrones" adjusted for the mentality of the domestic audience was quite natural and expected, at least as part of import substitution. Actually, the first attempt was made during the pandemic: the film "Eterna: part one" based on Vera Kamshi's series of novels "Reflections of Eterna" was released back in 2022. He was supposed to be the pilot for the series that was already planned at that time, but frankly did not go public. And no wonder: the film in an emphatically Medieval style was supposed to be shot in Hungary and the Czech Republic, but due to Covid, filming had to be moved to the Lenfilm pavilions. It turned out unconvincingly, as evidenced by the rating of 6.1 on Kinopoisk.
However, the creative team learned a lesson for themselves: by the beginning of the filming of the series, the cast was almost completely understaffed. In addition, it was decided to completely restart the cycle: "Etarna" will begin to tell the story from the beginning, as if the unsuccessful film did not exist at all. However, judging by the video sequence, the film crew did not manage to escape from the Lenfilm pavilions.
"Ballar"
Prime, July 9th
Rene Ballard, an experienced Los Angeles police detective, becomes the head of a department that deals with crimes that have not been solved in previous years. Among those whose cases the police have failed to bring to court, there are both dangerous maniacs and high-ranking officials, so Ballard's new job turns out to be truly dangerous. Fortunately, the famous detective Harry Bosch comes to her rescue, who, although he has retired, is ready with his abilities and experience to help colleagues in their difficult and confusing work.
The Ballar series is a spin-off of the TV show Bosch: Legacy, which is based on a series of novels about detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch by the star detective writer Michael Connelly, winner of ten prestigious literary awards, whose cumulative circulation worldwide is approaching 100 million copies. A good story is a great response: the series "Bosch: Legacy" has already had four seasons, which were very favorably received by the audience, and the creators clearly do not mind consolidating the success.
Fans of American detectives will be happy to find themselves in their element: the police department's open spaces, which resemble shooting galleries with feverish keystrokes, shooting galleries with ominous darkness similar to the lairs of maniacs, rookeries of maniacs, with an abundance of fussy experts not inferior to laboratories, and laboratories with the obligatory sharp-tongued expert lady, always bent over the next piece of evidence, looking like at its best in the case of a lying dead mouse. Consistency is a sign of mastery. Enjoy.
"Khutor"
TNT, July 10th
Financial coach and crook Artyom fell victim to his own scam, and now both police officers and bandits are hunting him in the capital. In an attempt to escape, he flees the city and pretends to be a Mowgli who has lost his memory, hoping to elude his pursuers, issue false documents and start a new life. However, the police bring him to the forest community, where a bald Father in a leather vest (Gosha Kutsenko) rules. He takes under his wing all those who are confused in life and do not know where to go, and fervently instills in them faith in true values with labor and rods. When Dad sees Artyom, he mistakes him for his own son, who disappeared many years ago, which only makes his upbringing more active. We'll find out who will make a man out of whom by the end.
Year after year, the pastoral with rods feels more and more confident in the position of the main artistic trend in mass cinema. From "The Serf" and "The Disobedient" — where, by the way, Kutsenko flashed — to "The Farm" the recipe for turning from a pig into a cherub is not diverse: a lot of nature, a lot of hard physical labor, a Russian folk costume with elements of design delights in the style of "oh, you're a goy, call a taxi" and Most importantly, the rods, and more. There is a logic to this: labor alone will not make a man out of a monkey, it has been proven in collective farms, but with rods there are possible options.
"Dexter: Resurrection"
Paramount+, July 11th
This is the third sequel to the cult series about Miami Police medical examiner and part-time homicidal maniac Dexter Morgan, who destroys criminals who managed to escape justice. The action takes place after the events of Dexter: New Blood. The plot centers on the confrontation between Dexter Morgan, who miraculously survived, and his grown—up son Harrison, who is terrified and angry about his father's true identity.
As usual, Dexter is played by Michael S. Hall, who has the craziest look since Jack Nicholson. In addition, the series will feature the familiar Captain Angel Batista, played by David Zayas, and the ghost of Dexter's father, played by James Remar. Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage will play a couple of new characters. The show continues, the quality is guaranteed.
"In the wilderness"
Netflix, July 17th
Yosemite National Park is one of the most famous nature reserves in the United States. But for National Park Service Special Agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana — "Troy"), this is the scene of a brutal crime that he has to solve. Kyle knows the reserve like the back of his hand, but the criminal seems to know the area just as well. Turner is assisted in his pursuit by recently enlisted Ranger Naya Vasquez, a former Los Angeles police officer who moved to Yosemite with her four—year-old son. During the investigation, each of them will have to come face to face not only with the criminal, but also with the ghosts of their own past.
The genre of the series is defined as a detective thriller, however, taking into account the endless impressive views of Yosemite, it can just as well be classified as nature films. Century-old redwoods, bizarrely shaped granite rocks wrapped in wisps of fog, the sullen grumble of the stream in the gorge... If it weren't for the dark plot, the series could be considered an advertisement for Yosemite Park (however, it was filmed in British Columbia). The series is charmingly beautiful — for lovers of harsh nature. It seems that the work of National Park Service agents is full of peculiar aesthetics. We'll decide how exciting it is when we see it.
