Another criminal case has been opened in Armenia against a clergyman — the person involved is Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan, head of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Armenian Prosecutor General's Office announced this on June 26.
The reason was the archbishop's public statements about the political situation in the country.
"The case was opened on June 17, on the grounds of Article 422 ("Public calls for the violent overthrow of power") The Criminal Code of Armenia," Sputnik Armenia reports.
Ajapakhyan himself said that law enforcement agencies have not contacted him yet.
On June 25, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, leader of the opposition movement "Holy Struggle", and 14 other people, his supporters, were detained in Armenia as part of a criminal case on an "attempt to seize power." On June 26, Galstanyan was arrested for two months.
The Investigative Committee (IC) of Armenia reported that 15 people were arrested in the criminal case of an attempt to "seize power." They noted that a number of searches had been conducted as part of the investigation into the case of "preparations for the seizure of power." Flammable objects designed to damage electrical wires were found in the homes of the participants in the movement.
