US President Donald Trump may nominate a candidate for the post of chairman of the Federal Reserve System (FRS) in the next two months. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Wednesday, June 25.

According to the newspaper's sources, former Fed Board member Kevin Warsh, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant, head of the National Economic Council at the White House Kevin Hassett, former World Bank President David Malpas and Fed Steering Committee member Christopher Waller are among the contenders for the post.

According to the authors of the material, Trump's decision to announce the candidate's name ahead of time may create problems both for himself and for the successor of the current Fed chairman Jerome Powell.

On April 17, Trump criticized Powell for conducting insufficiently soft monetary policy. He said that the head of the Fed should have lowered the key rate a long time ago, but now he just has to leave his post.

Powell himself said on April 16 that Trump's policy of tightening duties could lead to an acceleration in the rate of inflation in the United States and negatively affect economic growth. Powell stressed that the Fed has not faced a similar situation for about half a century. According to him, Trump's tariffs are pushing the US economy towards weaker growth, higher unemployment and faster inflation.
