- Erdogan called the issue of the Russian S-400 air defense systems in relations with the United States closed

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not discuss the availability of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems in the country at a meeting with American leader Donald Trump at the NATO summit in The Hague. At a press conference following the event on June 25, the Turkish leader said that this "issue is closed."
"We did not discuss the S-400 at the meeting with Trump. This issue is not on our agenda, it is closed. We discussed [buying] F-35 fighter jets. We paid $1.3 billion for them. We have seen that Trump has good intentions regarding our purchase of the F-35," Erdogan said at an event broadcast by the TRT Haber television channel.
The President added that the United States continues to responsibly fulfill its obligations to maintain and repair F-16 fighter jets.
"We also continue to cooperate with the UK and Germany on the Eurofighter fighter. Germany and the United Kingdom welcome our goodwill," Erdogan said.
On May 17, after his visit to Albania, Erdogan said that US sanctions under the CAATSA law imposed against Turkey for the purchase of S-400 from the Russian Federation had begun to ease. The Turkish president stressed that there should be no restrictions in the defense industry between the two countries, which are NATO allies. According to him, Ankara is interested in removing all barriers that contradict the spirit of strategic partnership with Washington.
Moscow signed a contract with Ankara for the supply of S-400 in 2017. At that time, Turkey was the first NATO country to purchase these systems from Russia. This decision caused a negative reaction from the United States and NATO. The White House has repeatedly warned the Turkish leadership about the negative consequences of arms purchases from Moscow, and in March 2020, it excluded Ankara from the program to create a new generation of F-35 fighter jets.
