Vadim Bogachev, a phlebologist and vascular surgeon at the First Phlebological Center in Moscow, spoke about the first symptoms of varicose veins.

In an interview with Radio1 on Wednesday, June 25, the expert noted that varicose veins are often called "female—faced disease" - it is four times more common in women. This is due, among other things, to pregnancy, childbirth and heredity.

Other reasons include prolonged wearing of heels, injuries during sports (especially football and hockey), excess weight, and static loads. The risk group includes tall people, office workers, as well as those whose work involves lifting weights.

Among the first signs of the disease, experts call swelling of the legs in the evening, asymmetry of the veins, decreased load tolerance, traces of shoes or socks, and dilated veins.

Doctor Bogachev called for taking short breaks during the working day, especially for those who sit a lot. Every 2.5–3 hours, you need to get up and move to ensure blood flow to your legs. Those who already have problems with their veins should do this more often. He also recommended to find out the presence of the disease in relatives and, if necessary, consult a doctor.

Bogachev also said that ultrasound is the main method of diagnosing varicose veins. Indications for surgery occur only in 25% of first-time patients, writes RT.
