Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has denied speculation about Canada's possible accession to the European Union (EU). He stated this on June 25 at a press conference in The Hague following the NATO summit.

"I'll say it bluntly: Canadians didn't tell me that. The short answer is no, we don't plan to go down that path," Carney said. His words are quoted by the CBC news agency.

However, the Canadian Prime minister expressed interest in strengthening partnership with the EU for "mutual benefit." He also said that Canada's proximity to Europe is due to "not only historical ties, but also common values such as freedom, democracy and solidarity."

Earlier in the day, the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, allowed Canada to join the EU. She noted that Canada is not geographically located on the European continent, but they can be connected to Europe through the Arctic.
