FT: Trump's statement on the fifth article of NATO has put the summit in jeopardy

The statement by US President Donald Trump regarding the fifth article of the NATO charter jeopardized the alliance's summit in The Hague. The Financial Times newspaper wrote about this on June 25, citing three European officials.
Earlier, Trump did not give a clear answer to the question of whether he remains committed to the principle of collective defense, enshrined in the fifth article of the North Atlantic Treaty.
"It depends on what definition you follow," the American leader said at the time.
According to the source of the publication, "the summit depends on what decision Trump makes regarding the protection of Europe."
"[Trump's] comments overshadowed the meeting and threatened to disrupt an event designed to preserve U.S. engagement in transatlantic relations. <...> We are all sitting here waiting for him to tell us if he will defend Europe," the publication said.
Earlier in the day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban noted a turn in NATO policy under the influence of Trump. The Hungarian Prime Minister added that the lack of discussion at the Ukraine summit reflects a change in the global approach under the influence of the new political reality.
