In order to understand how to moisturize dry skin, it is necessary to understand the causes of the feeling of tightness or puffiness of the face. After that, it will become clear which components the skin lacks to restore its water balance. Alexandra Popova, a technologist and developer of the cosmetics brand Arabia Laboratories, told Izvestia about this on June 26.

According to the expert, dry skin is not only a lack of water, but also a deficiency of sebum and intercellular lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids). It is these components that create a strong barrier that prevents moisture loss and provides a feeling of hydration and nourishment to the skin.

The causes of dryness can be a lack of moisture in the stratum corneum, damage or deficiency of the lipid barrier, low humidity, aggressive cleansing, as well as an age-related decrease in the production of natural moisturizing factors. This condition is manifested by peeling, a feeling of tightness and the appearance of fine wrinkles.

Another problem, swelling— occurs for various reasons: due to microcirculation disorders, poor lymph outflow, inflammatory processes, disruptions in the body's water-salt balance, allergic reactions, or even mechanical effects, such as compression of blood vessels and lymphatic tracts during sleep.

Morning "bags" under the eyes, puffiness of the face and long—lasting marks from the bed or fingers help to recognize puffiness. If a light pressure leaves a slowly disappearing dimple, this is a clear sign of fluid retention.

With dry skin, hyaluronic acid alone is essential. It is also necessary to include ceramides, nourishing oils and antioxidants. In addition to rich nourishing creams, it is also necessary to pay attention to the overall water balance of the body, as well as additional hydration of the face during the day.

"I recommend the mist moisturizing serum with the natural NMF moisturizing factor. It attracts and retains moisture, improving skin hydration, and is suitable for daily use, including on top of makeup throughout the day," advises Alexandra Popova.

To combat edema, the specialist suggests using products with caffeine, troxerutin, menthol and niacinamide. For example, a lymphatic drainage mask with red algae and caffeine. Its active ingredients help to improve blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, effectively relieve swelling. Facial massage techniques will help enhance the effect of decongestant cosmetics.

Sometimes, according to the specialist, dryness and puffiness are bothering at the same time, against the background of a puffy face, flaky skin areas can be noticed. In such cases, it's worth thinking about minerals. In addition to sodium, which retains water in the body, potassium and magnesium are also important. They must be used not only as part of the cream, but also to maintain the internal balance of the elements.

"With persistent, recurring skin problems, a systematic approach is needed. It is necessary to find out the cause of dryness or swelling together with a doctor, and use cosmetics as support," concludes the expert from Arabia Laboratories.

Earlier, on April 16, Natalia Mikhailova, a cosmetologist and creator of the MESALTERA by Dr. Mikhaylova brand of professional cosmeceuticals, told Izvestia that mild cleansers should be used in the warm season — foams, gels or mousses with the addition of acids or enzymes.
