Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, the leader of the opposition "Holy Struggle" party detained in Armenia, who is a political opponent of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, has been charged under articles on terrorism, riots and usurpation of power. His lawyer Sergey Harutyunyan announced this on June 25.

The defender noted that the accusations sounded ridiculous.

"Vladyka Bagrat has been charged under the articles previously mentioned by the investigation, that is, "Terrorism," "Mass riots," "Usurpation of power." <...> These are ridiculous articles," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

Harutyunyan added that everything that happens to his client is political persecution.

On the same day, law enforcement agencies detained Galstanyan in Armenia. Harutyunyan said that by a court decision, the archbishop's house was searched, after which the clergyman was taken to the Investigative Committee (IC) of the state. The agency announced that the "Holy Struggle" movement under Galstanyan's leadership was allegedly preparing terrorist attacks and a seizure of power.

Later, Pashinyan said that the country's law enforcement agencies had managed to prevent a large-scale plan to seize power.
