The member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have committed to allocate 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) to defense by 2035. This was reported on June 25 by The Telegraph newspaper with reference to the declaration of the alliance.

"The Allies commit to provide 5% annually [ ... ] GDP for basic defense needs, as well as for defense and security-related expenditures, to ensure the fulfillment of our individual and collective obligations by 2035," the newspaper said.

It is clarified that this decision was made as a result of NATO's intentions to increase resources for defense in the event of a possible danger. According to the declaration, the alliance members are going to allocate funds to finance basic defense needs, as well as to achieve NATO's potential targets.

In addition, according to the document, NATO countries plan to review the trajectory and indicators of defense spending by 2029. It is noted that they also expressed their willingness to continue supporting Ukraine by paying contributions to its defense and defense industry.

On June 5, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte officially proposed to raise the level of military spending of the countries of the military alliance to 5% of their GDP. According to him, 3.5% of GDP will be spent on basic defense spending, and 1.5% on additional security—related expenses.
