US President Donald Trump's position on NATO could jeopardize the unity of the alliance. This was stated on June 25 by political analyst Alexander Asafov in an interview with Izvestia.

He explained that the American leader, as a businessman, is looking for deals and can demand from allies increased contributions and mandatory purchases of weapons from the United States in exchange for their support.

In addition, the expert added, article five of the NATO Constitution, which obliges members to respond to an armed attack on one of the states, remains unused and probably will not be applied in the future.

"The future of the fifth article of the Constitution is exactly the same as the present past. It will remain letters in the document, in the contract, letters that have not been applied, are not applied and will not be applied," he said.

The political scientist also recalled that in the entire history of this article, it was used only once — at the time of the attack on the twin Towers in the United States.

As for the steps that the countries of the alliance can take to strengthen it, Asafov said that the actions of NATO members are likely to be irrational.

"They will cajole Trump, they will try to flatter him, they will nod when he talks about the colossal victory over Iran and the admirable actions of the United States," he added.

On the same day, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that Trump's comments on article five of the North Atlantic Treaty endangered the NATO summit in The Hague. The point is that the American leader did not give an unambiguous answer to the question of whether he remains committed to the principle of collective defense enshrined in the document.

Prior to that, on June 24, The New York Times (NYT) newspaper stated that the leaked US intelligence report on minor damage to Iran's nuclear program had become a factor overshadowing Trump's triumph at the NATO summit in The Hague. It is noted that the preliminary conclusions of the report on Tehran's nuclear program are of great force, since the Pentagon was the author of the assessment.
