Szijjarto noted NATO's common sense on Ukraine's membership
The NATO countries have shown common sense by excluding the issue of Ukraine's accession to the alliance from the agenda. This was announced on June 24 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
"Ukraine's membership in NATO has been removed from the agenda, and direct confrontation with Russia has been avoided. Rationality prevailed," Szijjarto wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
The minister also noted that the upcoming NATO summit is the first since 2022, where the focus is not on strengthening support for Ukraine, but on strengthening the Alliance.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on the same day that Ukraine should not be accepted into the European Union (EU) and NATO, as this decision would lead to a war between Western countries and Russia. According to him, at the same time, Ukraine's membership in NATO "created the danger of the outbreak of World War III." In this regard, the Hungarian Prime Minister stressed that Kiev should not be accepted into associations.
