According to data for the first five months of 2025, the number of travelers in Russia increased by 22% compared to the same period last year. This is stated on June 24 in the report of the geospatial data analysis platform Geocursor from VK Predict, which was reviewed by Izvestia.

According to the analysis, the most active travelers are residents of the two capitals (a quarter of the tourist flow from all Russians): Muscovites — 16.3%, residents of St. Petersburg - 9%. Residents of small towns, in turn, showed the most significant increase in tourist activity.

"The most popular destinations among Muscovites are the Vladimir Region, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar Territory and neighboring regions: Tver, Tula, Kaluga, Ryazan regions. The top 5 destinations in St. Petersburg include Moscow, Novgorod, Tver and Pskov regions, as well as Karelia," the press release says.

The most popular holiday destinations for Russians in general are Moscow (20%) and the Moscow Region (18%), St. Petersburg and Krasnodar Krai (7% each). The top ten also included the Leningrad Region (6%), the Rostov and Vladimir Regions, the Republic of Tatarstan (4% each), and the Voronezh and Sverdlovsk Regions (3% each).

"Among tourists who travel to foreign countries and have a high level of income, such destinations as the Murmansk Region, Karelia, Altai, Sakhalin are becoming the most in demand. They also willingly visit regions near the two capitals, choosing these destinations for weekend trips. Thus, the Tver, Pskov, Novgorod, Vladimir, and Yaroslavl regions have a high proportion of well—off tourists," comments Roman Styatyugin, director of the VK Predict Center for Analytical Products.

The average travel time is just over two days. For a longer trip, tourists choose the Kamchatka Territory, Murmansk and Kaliningrad regions (four days each), Irkutsk and Arkhangelsk regions, Dagestan, Buryatia and Krasnodar Territory (three days each).

On June 17, the Ministry of Education and Science informed Izvestia that since the beginning of 2025, 57 thousand participants have registered in the Studtourism program, and about 15 thousand students have already traveled. According to it, university students, young professionals, workers and scientists from 18 to 35 years old can visit 117 cities of Russia, as well as China, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Uzbekistan. Young people pay for participation themselves, but the cost of housing on the trip is partially borne by partner universities.
