The human body has the potential to reach 120-125 years of age thanks to modern medical technologies and a healthy lifestyle. Svetlana Rykova, Deputy Director for Methodological Work of the Institute of Professional Education at Sechenov University, Associate Professor of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases, head of the Biohacking educational program, PhD, told Izvestia on July 25.

According to her, a combination of genetic factors, quality of medicine and lifestyle plays a key role in longevity. Genome editing technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9, which are already being used to treat hereditary diseases, are of particular importance.

"Gene editing is not fantastic, it is already being used for a number of diseases. Newborns undergo advanced neonatal screening to detect hereditary diseases <...>. For example, in spinal muscular atrophy, early diagnosis makes it possible to prescribe innovative treatment to a child, thanks to which he will live and develop fully," explains Rykova.

The specialist calls mRNA technologies used to create vaccines and drugs against oncological and infectious diseases no less promising. According to Rykova, Sechenov University is actively involved in the development of this field, cooperating with leading scientific centers.

The specialist pays special attention to the concept of biological age, which may differ from chronological age. Exceeding the biological age by more than five years indicates accelerated aging. In this case, it is necessary to reconsider the lifestyle.

Manageable factors of longevity include quitting smoking and alcohol abuse, weight control and dietary restriction of saturated fats, regular physical activity, stress management and timely diagnosis of chronic diseases.

"Cardiovascular diseases remain in the first place in terms of mortality, and malignant neoplasms are in the second place. And these diseases are a consequence, among other things, of neglecting to take care of one's health. So the rate of aging can only be stopped comprehensively," concluded Rykova.

Earlier, on September 26, Rykova told Izvestia about biohacking. According to her, this is the improvement of the body, the body's capabilities, the cognitive functions of the brain, and the training of stress management using various methods based on scientific research.
