The Russian Security Council called for adapting the UN to new realities

The United Nations (UN) needs to be adapted to new realities, as well as to carry out targeted transformations. This was stated on June 24 by Alexander Venediktov, Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council, at a meeting of the secretaries of the Security Councils of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states.
According to him, Russia and other SCO member states link the future of the multipolar world with the coordinating role of the United Nations.
"It is necessary to adapt the organization to the evolving realities, to carry out targeted transformations that would reflect the increasing contribution of developing countries to global affairs," RIA Novosti quoted Venediktov as saying.
He also pointed out the special importance of conscientious observance of the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and interrelationship. A selective approach to compliance with norms should be categorically unacceptable, no matter what its motivation, the Deputy Secretary of the Security Council stressed.
On May 9, Dmitry Polyansky, the first deputy permanent representative of the Russian mission to the United Nations, said that the Russian Federation has its own ideas about the updated UN. Moscow is ready for a constructive discussion on this topic, he noted.
