Russia expresses extreme concern about the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and is particularly alarmed that Iran was attacked by a country that is one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council (SC). This was stated on June 24 by Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Alexander Venediktov during a speech at the opening of the 20th meeting of the secretaries of the Security Councils of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Beijing.

He clarified that Russia strongly condemns the US attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.

"It is particularly alarming that the strike was carried out by a country that is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and a new round of dangerous escalation is fraught with further undermining regional and global security," Venediktov said, as quoted by TASS.

The day before, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Russian Federation stated that Russia is calling for an end to the escalation of the armed conflict in the Middle East, as well as to refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric. They stressed that the parties need to return to political and diplomatic efforts and respect for international legality.

On June 21, US President Donald Trump announced a successful attack on three Iranian nuclear facilities. He later threatened Tehran with new strikes if peace was not achieved.
