Psychologists gave advice on preparing a child for graduation

The school graduation marks the transition to the next stage of life, so it is important to understand how the teenager himself wants to celebrate this holiday, psychologists told Izvestia.

If a teenager willingly chooses a dress or costume for a holiday, discusses the image, then the parents' task is to support and help organize a comfortable participation, said family psychotherapist Olga Kushnareva.

"If a child does not want to go to a party or is going only to the official part, it does not mean that something is wrong with him. Teenagers experience separation from the stage of school life in different ways. For some it's a holiday, but for others it's an extra social burden, especially if there were conflicts in the classroom or relationships didn't work out," she explained.

Kushnareva recommended that parents discuss with their child the preparations for the holiday and focus primarily on his desire, rather than the prevailing stereotypes in society. Attempts to pressure and force, according to her, can lead to conflict.

"Choosing a protest outfit is also a form of self—expression. It is important to discuss boundaries here, but not to suppress personality," the psychologist believes.

An imposed external image can spoil a teenager's sense of celebration, says Olesya Tolstukhina, a clinical psychologist at the Doctor Nearby medical technology company.

"If the child feels "out of place" in the outfit, behavior and movements will be constrained, the whole holiday can become a continuous tension and stress," she warned.

Psychologists believe that the decision on how graduation will take place should be made within the family.

Graduation ceremonies in most Russian schools will be held on June 28-29.
