Members of the US House of Representatives have been banned from using the WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) on government gadgets for security reasons. This was announced on June 23 by the Axios portal.

"House of Representatives staff are not allowed to download or store the WhatsApp app on any House device," the House administration said in an email obtained by Axios.

The letter notes that the cybersecurity department considered WhatsApp to be a "high-risk" application due to "a lack of transparency in how it protects user data, and a lack of encryption of stored data."

Andy Stone, a representative of WhatsApp Meta's parent company, said he did not agree with such a description of the application by Congress.

"WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, meaning they are only seen by the recipients, not WhatsApp itself. This is a higher level of security than most of the applications from the list approved by the Chamber," he explained.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt announced on June 17 that US President Donald Trump had decided to postpone the blocking of TikTok in the United States for 90 days. According to her information, the American leader does not want the platform to "go into the shadows."
