The authorities of the U.S. state of New York are planning to build a large nuclear power plant (NPP) - the first in more than 15 years in the United States. The Wall Street Journal wrote about this on June 23.

New York State Governor Kathy Hokul has instructed the state-owned electric power company to add "at least 1 GW of new nuclear generation to its outdated reactor fleet." Approximately this amount is needed to power about 1 million homes.

"I will strive to ensure that every company that wants to come to New York, and everyone who wants to live here, never worries about the reliability and availability of their utilities," Hokul said.

The New York State Department of Energy (New York Power Authority) will find a site in upstate New York and determine the design of the reactor.

"The project will also offer a practical assessment of the decrees signed by [US President Donald Trump] in May aimed at accelerating the development of projects in the field of nuclear energy," the material says.

The newspaper clarifies that since 1991, only five new commercial reactors have been commissioned in the United States, which turned out to be insufficient to compensate for the decommissioning of old plants.

On May 24, Trump signed a decree on the start of construction of 10 new nuclear reactors in the country by 2030, which will independently ensure the energy consumption of the United States. The head of the US Department of Energy was also instructed to ensure the provision of resources for restarting closed nuclear power plants, increasing the capacity of existing ones and completing the construction of those nuclear power plants that were suspended.
