Racing Lada Vesta turned out to be faster than foreign cars in St. Petersburg
The Lada Sport Rosneft team has won the second stage of the Russian Ring Racing Series ("SMP RSKG"), which took place at the motorhome "Igor Drive" near St. Petersburg. The pilots on Tolyatti machines won victories in two key classes — SMP TCR Russia and Super-Production, the Izvestia correspondent reports.
In Saturday's rainy SMP TCR Russia race, where, in addition to Lada, athletes compete in Hyundai Elantra, Cupra Leon, Hyundai i30 and Audi RS3 racing cars, the right choice of strategy was the decisive success factor. Some put four rain tires, others preferred slicks on the front axle.
At first, the choice was in favor of four rain tires, but later the track dried out enough for slicks to work, and the entire top five were made up of drivers who chose the tire "mix". Lada Sport Rosneft pilots relied on slicks, which provided them with a significant advantage in conditions of a drying track.
Ivan Chubarov, who started from the second position, took the lead in the first laps and maintained the lead until the finish, winning his debut victory of the season with an advantage of almost 30 seconds. This is the first victory of the Lada brand in the top class in two years. Vladimir Sheshenin, who also competes on Lada, withdrew from the race due to wheel damage.
In the "Super-Production" class, Lada Sport Rosneft pilots fought with racers on Honda, Subaru and Volkswagen models. Leonid Panfilov and Andrey Petukhov took first and second places, securing victory in the team competition. In Sunday's race, Petukhov continued his successful performance, becoming the third.
The third of the seven stages of this season of the SMP RSKG will be held at the Nizhny Novgorod Ring circuit on July 11-13.
On June 19, it was reported that production of the new Lada Iskra model would begin at the former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg.
