NATO countries intend to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. This was announced on June 23 by the Secretary General of the alliance Mark Rutte at a press conference on the eve of the NATO summit in The Hague.

"The [NATO] allies have long concluded that Iran should not develop nuclear weapons," he said.

The NATO Secretary General added that the West had "repeatedly urged" Tehran to fulfill its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

On June 22, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Iran's abandonment of its nuclear program. He stressed that the United States is not working on a change of power in Iran, but is trying to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
