Hungary and Slovakia blocked the adoption of the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions at a meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) in Brussels. This was announced on June 23 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.

"Slovakia and I have decided not to support the adoption of the 18th package of sanctions. We will not allow Hungary to be forced to pay the price for unlimited support for Ukraine," he told reporters after the meeting, which was broadcast on his Faceebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

According to him, the decision was made against the background of the EU's intention to also ban the purchase of Russian oil and gas. Szijjarto noted that Hungary and Slovakia are not ready to abandon these energy resources.

Alexander Frolov, Deputy Director General of the National Energy Institute, in an interview with Izvestia on June 11, called the EU's anti-Russian sanctions a marketing policy. He stressed that for this reason, the European Union cannot stop adopting sanctions against Russia.
