The sanctions policy of the European Union (EU) towards Russia will lead it to economic decline. Vladimir Chizhov, the former permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the EU (2005-2022), told Izvestia on June 23.

"If and when, there will be people in the European Union who are able to critically rethink the policy they are pursuing so far, because foreign policy leads them not only to tension in relations with Russia, but it will lead to the economic decline of the European Union itself," Chizhov said on the sidelines of the XI International Scientific and Expert Forum. "Primakov readings".

According to him, EU sanctions have recently been directed against third countries. He added that, based on its actions, the alliance is spoiling relations with almost the whole world.

"They (restrictions. — Ed.) are largely secondary sanctions, that is, they are directed against third countries. In other words, the European Union is antagonizing almost the entire world," the diplomat said.

On May 16, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, threatened to lower the ceiling on Russian oil prices and strengthen sanctions against the Russian financial sector. In addition, she noted at the time that the EU would impose sanctions on oil tankers.

Prior to that, Dmitry Birichevsky, director of the Department of Economic Cooperation at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on June 8 that the European Union continues to impose new sanctions against Russia, despite its own economic losses, because "otherwise it will lose face."
