Timely visit: Vladimir Putin and Abbas Araqchi held a meeting in the Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held a meeting in the Kremlin on June 23. During the talks, the Russian leader said that Russia is making efforts to assist the Iranian people. The details of the conversation can be found in the Izvestia article.
What did Putin and Arakchi talk about in the Kremlin?
Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in the Kremlin on June 23, said that the unprovoked aggression against Iran has no grounds and there is no justification for it.
In addition, Putin conveyed his best wishes to Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In turn, Araqchi expressed gratitude to Russia for condemning the actions of Israel and the United States.
"We also wanted to thank the Russian Federation for strongly condemning these actions. Russia is on the right side of history and international law today," Araqchi said.
During the meeting, the Iranian Foreign Minister also noted that tensions in the Middle East are growing due to the attacks by Israel and the United States on the Islamic Republic. According to him, Tehran considers the actions of the United States and Israel against Iran to be illegitimate, and protection against them is legitimate.
The Russian side's position on the Iran-Israel conflict
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the American attacks and stressed that this irresponsible decision grossly violates the Charter of the United Nations (UN).
The US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities has become a new round of escalation of tension in the region. Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed concern about the strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities and their consequences. He pointed out that the Kremlin expresses regret in this regard.
Vladimir Putin said on June 19 that a possible way out of the Iran-Israel conflict should take into account the interests of the two sides. According to him, Russia is in contact with Israel and Iran, does not seek mediation, but offers ideas for resolving the conflict.
In turn, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said that Russia considers Israeli attacks on peaceful targets in Iran unacceptable and illegal. He also noted that the Russian side demands that Israel immediately stop attacks on nuclear and peaceful facilities.
On Russian-Iranian relations
The first half of 2025 was a period of active development of Iranian-Russian relations, the key event of which was the signing and ratification of a large-scale Strategic Partnership Agreement, as well as regular high-level contacts amid the worsening regional situation.
Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian held talks in the Kremlin on January 17. At the same time, the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between the two countries was signed. The document, designed for 20 years with automatic renewal, covers economic, military, political and cultural cooperation, including defense, counterterrorism, energy and cybersecurity.
"I am confident that the agreements reached will further strengthen the entire range of Russian-Iranian relations and ties. Of course, the signed interstate agreement will serve this purpose," the Russian leader said.
In February, Ayatollah Sheikh Ahmad Moballegi, a member of the Council of Experts under the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran, told RIA Novosti that friendly and trusting relations between Russia and Iran would only grow stronger and expand in the near future. He noted the importance of joint actions to counter modern challenges.
"The traditionally warm, trusting ties between Tehran and Moscow, direct ties between our heads of state and visits to each other, the expansion of economic, cultural and religious contacts, and activities within the framework of people's diplomacy indicate that relations between Iran and Russia will only grow stronger in the coming years," Moballegi said.
Already in April of this year, the Russian State Duma unanimously ratified the strategic partnership agreement with Iran, stressing that the agreement does not create a military alliance, but provides for mutual non-interference in the event of aggression by third parties.
