Russia strongly condemns the horrific terrorist attack on an Orthodox church in the Syrian city of Damascus. This was announced on June 23 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"We strongly condemn this monstrous terrorist act, the victims of which were innocent people. We offer our condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," she said in a comment on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to Zakharova, the Russian side hopes that all the organizers of this crime will be punished as they deserve. In addition, she added that the Russian Federation is ready to assist in the long-term normalization of the military-political situation in this country.
The explosion at St. Elijah's Church in the eastern part of Damascus, where the Christian population lives, became known on June 22. Later, the Syria TV channel reported the first deaths, their number was 20 people. On the same day, information appeared that one of the suicide bombers was a member of the Islamic State terrorist organization (IS, banned in the Russian Federation).
