The Moldovan authorities intend to cast 500,000 ballots in the parliamentary elections to be held in September. This was announced by former President of the Republic Igor Dodon to TASS on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

"According to our information, compared to the presidential elections [in 2024], when they cast 300,000 ballots, their task now is to cast 500,000," he said in an interview.

Dodon stressed that the European Union (EU) is directly interfering in the election campaign in Moldova. According to him, the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, has set the republic's authorities the task of retaining Maia Sandu as President of Moldova.

According to the politician, the parliamentary elections in Moldova are more important than the presidential ones, because "a president without a parliament is a lame political duck."

On June 20, Dodon told Izvestia on the sidelines of the SPIEF that the next few months would be key for Moldova in light of the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of September. Dodon added that other European leaders want to keep power for Sandu, but for this they need control over parliament.
