Military personnel of the army Corps of the Eastern Military District (VVO) found more than 3,500 explosive objects on the Kuril island of Shumshu during mine clearance. This was announced on June 23 by the press service of the department.
It is specified that a total of 44 hectares of the island are planned to be cleared. The main works are underway in the area of Cape Kurbatov, where the reconstruction of the amphibious landing, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II, will take place.
"To date, 28 hectares have been cleared, and 3,514 explosive objects have been found, which are destroyed by detonation," the press service told TASS.
