US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities may provoke the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran, which, in turn, threatens a global energy crisis. Igor Yushkov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, shared this belief with Izvestia on June 22.

"Iran will now respond by attacking both Israel and American military installations in the region. And then they can launch attacks on Iran's oil infrastructure. <...> If Israel and the United States bomb the oil infrastructure, Iran will have nothing to lose. Then it will close the Strait of Hormuz and oil prices will go into triple digits," the expert explained.

Yushkov added that approximately 25% of the world's oil passes through the strait every day, as well as about 30% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from around the world. Blocking the strategic hub will be a blow to consumer countries, but it will give a short-term advantage to producers using alternative routes.

According to the expert, Tehran will not close navigation for a long time — all Western countries, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other states will seek to unblock the strait. At the same time, he stressed that ultra-high prices destroy demand, which means that such exchange rate hikes will not be beneficial to anyone.

"At the moment, it is still not beneficial for Iran to block the Strait of Hormuz, but if the conflict escalates, this may well happen," the expert concluded.

The US attack on Iran's three nuclear facilities became known on June 21. US President Donald Trump said that the attack was aimed at three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan. According to Trump, the operation was successful. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in turn, said that American strikes could change history.

Later, Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi said that the United States had violated the UN Charter and would face long-term consequences. The minister stressed that in accordance with the UN Charter, which allows for a legitimate response in self-defense, Iran reserves all possible options to protect its sovereignty, interests and people.
