- The media learned about the serious consequences for the Trump presidency from the strikes on Iran

US President Donald Trump's decision to strike at Iran's nuclear facilities will have profound consequences for his entire presidency. The Washington Post (WP) writes about this on June 22.
"What happens next will have profound consequences for him (Trump. — ed.) of the presidency. If Iran is sufficiently weakened and does not have the ability to launch a meaningful retaliatory strike, <...> [this] will send a signal to China, Russia and other global competitors that he (Trump. - ed.) will not hesitate to use military force when necessary," the publication said.
But if Iran does not agree to peace on the terms set by Trump, then the words of the head of the White House about "many goals" on the territory of the Islamic Republic "opened the door to a much deeper and potentially longer conflict," the article says.
At the same time, WP emphasizes that Trump came to power in the wake of criticism of the military conflict in the Middle East. "Now he can have his own [war]," the authors of the material state.
The prospects of the United States being drawn into another protracted military conflict "are already angering some members of his political base." The newspaper sees in the decision of Trump, who, while in power 10 years ago, actively criticized the war in Iraq, an "extraordinary turn" in his policy.
"He condemned former President George W. Bush for that war and promised not to empty the American treasury for foreign intrigues that cost Americans their lives and, as he claimed, did little to advance U.S. interests. In recent months, Trump has seemed so focused on diplomatic efforts with Tehran that he has upset hawks in his own party.
Nevertheless, the Iranian government has demonstrated for decades the ability to project power far beyond its borders. "If Iran retaliates against American troops or citizens, the conflict could quickly escalate — this is one of the reasons why no US president before Trump tried to launch a military strike against Iran's nuclear program," the article says.
Democratic Senator Jack Reed, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, called Trump's actions a "major gamble" that may not pay off.
The US attack on Iran's three nuclear facilities became known on June 21. US President Donald Trump said that the attack was aimed at three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan. According to Trump, the operation was successful. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that American strikes could change history.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, in turn, accused the United States of violating the UN Charter, international law and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The minister stressed that the attack from Washington would have lasting consequences.
