Scott Ritter, a former UN weapons inspector in Iraq, sharply condemned the US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22 in an interview with Izvestia, calling them illegal and senseless.

"First of all, this is an act of war. Illegal aggression. Violation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. It can take a long time to list all the negative consequences of this decision. It creates the risk of Iran retaliating against American facilities in the region and oil infrastructure, which could trigger a global economic collapse," Ritter said.

According to him, the result of the operation turned out to be insignificant, since the key components of Iran's nuclear program were withdrawn in advance.

"There are also Iranian scientists. So statements about a "fatal strike" on Iran's nuclear program are ridiculous nonsense," Ritter added.

In his opinion, the current escalation is capable of pushing Iran to retaliate, dragging the entire region into a major conflict and involving the United States in a new war.

The attack on three nuclear facilities became known on June 21. US President Donald Trump said that the attack was aimed at three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan. According to Trump, the operation was successful. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in turn, said that American strikes could change history.
