American leader Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were unable to organize talks between the United States and Iran in Istanbul, as Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei did not get in touch. This was reported on June 21 by the Axios agency, citing sources.

"Trump and Erdogan quietly tried to arrange a meeting between senior U.S. and Iranian officials in Istanbul this week. <...> But the efforts failed because the supreme leader of Iran, who is hiding for fear of being killed, could not be contacted," the publication says.

It is clarified that the American leader insisted on direct talks with representatives of Iran. He also announced his readiness to personally come to Istanbul, hoping that this would help conclude a nuclear agreement and avoid US military intervention.

According to the agency, after plans to hold talks in Turkey failed, the White House administration became less confident that the issue could be resolved diplomatically.

On the same day, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance said that Trump would try to resolve the conflict with Iran diplomatically until the last moment. He noted that the final decision on this issue will be made by the American leader, and "the time for diplomacy is running out."
