Online cinemas in Russia earned more than 120 billion last year

In Russia, the online cinema industry is developing rapidly, with revenue of over 120 billion rubles last year. Anton Volodkin, CEO of Wink, announced this on June 21 at the session "How to turn creative Ideas into money: from Subsidies to Capital" at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).
"If five years ago, in 2020, we dreamed that maybe one day online cinemas would catch up with the film distribution industry in terms of revenue, now the revenue of online cinemas is twice as high as the film distribution. The industry is really growing at a tremendous pace," said the head of Wink.
According to him, the development of this sphere allows creating a large number of new jobs and providing opportunities for everyone who wants to enter this industry, as well as major specialists in this field.
In addition, he stressed that in 2022, Western partners, leaving the Russian market, hoped to destroy this industry, however, on the contrary, this contributed to its development, since the platforms decided to invest in their own production. The proceeds are now being used to improve this area in Russia. Large-scale projects are being created that support the cultural code of the nation and develop the industry.
On June 20, VK Video and NMG DOC signed the largest deal in the documentary film market. It was clarified that in the near future, only 52 films produced by NMG DOC will appear on VK Video.
