Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has instructed Iran's Assembly of Experts, responsible for appointing the supreme leader, to quickly select his successor from among three names proposed by him amid statements from Israel about plans to eliminate him. The New York Times writes about this on June 21, citing sources.

"The Ayatollah made the unusual decision to instruct the Assembly of Experts of his country, the spiritual body responsible for appointing the supreme leader, to quickly select his successor from three names proposed by him," the publication wrote.

It is reported that the process of appointing a new supreme leader can usually take months, as clerics choose from their own lists of names, but in the context of the escalating conflict, the Ayatollah wants to ensure a "quick, orderly transition."

According to sources, Ayatollah Khamenei's son Mojtaba, a cleric close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), is not among the candidates. At the same time, the specific names of possible successors are not specified.

It is also reported that since the beginning of the escalation of the conflict, Khamenei has been living and working in a tightly guarded complex in the center of Tehran called Beit Rahbari (house of the leader) and he rarely leaves the premises, except for special occasions such as preaching.

On June 17, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz threatened Khamenei with the fate of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who was captured and executed after the invasion of his country by the US-led coalition. Katz added that his country is attacking Iran on all fronts in accordance with its goals.
