Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence that the vast majority of Ukrainian citizens are interested in friendship with Russia. He said this in an interview with Sky News Arabia on June 21, stressing that despite the current conflict, historically close ties remain between the peoples of the two countries.

Putin also said that Russia insists on Kiev's recognition of the results of referendums held in four regions that have become part of Russia. According to him, ignoring these results "means the likelihood of a resumption of armed conflict."
