The Quincy Promes case. The star of "Spartak" was deported to the Netherlands
Former Spartak and Netherlands national football team player Quincy Promes was extradited from the UAE to his native country. There he will serve a 7.5-year prison sentence for drug smuggling and stabbing his cousin. Exactly what the 33-year—old player was found guilty of is in the Izvestia article.
What is Promes accused of?
• Promes' problems with the law, which eventually led to his imprisonment, began in July 2020. Then the media reported that the football player, who was playing for Ajax Amsterdam at the time, attacked his cousin with a knife during a birthday celebration. The reason for the conflict was an expensive necklace stolen from Promes' aunt. In March 2022, when the footballer had already moved to Russia and began playing for Spartak, he was charged with premeditated attempted murder, which was later commuted to aggravated assault.
• The wiretapping of Promes' phone and intercepted messages were used as evidence. The football player used such phrases as "I would have stabbed him, you know that," "he was lucky," "if someone steals something from my aunt, I'll kill him," and "you're lucky that I no longer carry firearms." As a result, the court sentenced Promes to 18 months in prison.
• The reason why Promes' phone was tapped was that in parallel, law enforcement agencies were investigating a case of large-scale drug smuggling. In April 2020, a large shipment of cocaine disguised as sea salt was discovered in the port of Antwerp. The total weight of the illegal cargo exceeded 1300 kg. During the investigation, it turned out that Promes had invested 200,000 euros in transporting cocaine, while the value of the entire shipment on the black market reached 120 million euros.
• The prosecutor's office demanded that Promes be sentenced to nine years in prison in the smuggling case. In February 2024, the court sentenced him to six years in prison in addition to the existing term for stabbing. Together with Promes, his relative was sentenced to six years. The football player's property, consisting of nine houses in different cities of the Netherlands, was seized.
How Promes was extradited
• In both cases, the court's decision turned out to be in absentia, as Promes left the Netherlands back in February 2021. Since that time, he has performed in Russia and could not be extradited to his homeland due to the lack of a corresponding agreement between the two countries.
However, in February 2024, 12 days after the verdict in the drug case, Promes was detained at Dubai airport, where he and Spartak were undergoing a winter training camp. The detention was carried out at the request of the Netherlands, with which the UAE has an extradition treaty. Promes spent three months in custody, after which he was released on bail without the right to leave the country.
• The footballer spent more than a year at large in the UAE and during this time managed to sign a one-year contract with the local club United, which plays in the second strongest division of the national championship. Promes scored 19 goals and became the second scorer of the tournament, and his club took the fourth place.
• Early in the morning on June 12, Promes was arrested at his home in Dubai, after which the Dutch prosecutor's office confirmed the extradition procedure that had begun. Eight days later, the football player was taken to the Netherlands on a business jet specially chartered by the judicial authorities, as flying on a regular flight in his case did not meet security issues. Shortly before his detention in the UAE, Promes tried to challenge his immediate arrest if he entered the Netherlands, but the court did not grant his request.
What is Promes known for?
Promes is a graduate of Ajax Amsterdam, but was expelled from its academy at the age of 16 due to bad behavior. He started his professional career at FC Twente and soon attracted the attention of many European clubs. In 2014, Promes joined Spartak Moscow for the first time, his transfer amounted to €10 million.
• For four seasons, Promes was one of Spartak's leading players and the club's most productive striker. Under his leadership, the team won the Russian championship for the first time in 16 years, and also won the National Super Cup. Promes became the top scorer of the Russian Premier League in the 2017/18 season and twice won the Golden Boar award as the best Spartak player according to fans.
• In 2018, Promes moved to Sevilla, Spain, where he spent one unsuccessful season, and returned to Ajax, with whom he won the Dutch championship. In February 2021, he returned to Spartak, signing a four-year contract, and once again became one of the main stars of the team. Promes won the Russian Cup 2022 and won the Golden Boar twice more. For all his time in the team, he scored 114 goals in 235 matches, becoming the sixth in the list of the team's top scorers and its most productive player in the Russian championships. At the same time, he did not enter the field for the last six months of his contract, as he remained in the UAE.
• From 2014 to 2021, Promes was regularly called up to the Dutch national team and played 50 matches in it. He participated in the European Championship in 2021 and became the silver medalist of the first Nations League draw in 2019.
