Brazilian journalist Pepe Escobar, commenting on the deliberate creation of fake news in Western countries, called on the BRICS countries to fight false information in the media. He stated this to Izvestia on June 20 on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

"We need to add, for example, the idea that there should be fact-checking at the BRICS organization level, so that this idea is on the agenda in BRICS, and then in the entire Global South, taking into account the efforts of the countries of the Global South, and I include Russia and China in this association," he said. Escobar also called Western countries experts in creating fake news. According to him, it was they who invented them. He also recalled the actions of the European Commission (EC), saying that even before the start of the special operation, it was an absolutely gigantic fake machine.

In addition, the journalist noted that distorted information is transmitted daily in press releases from Brussels. In turn, most European media outlets do not verify the accuracy of the information, he added.

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned of the threat of fakes to international relations. According to her, they can also be created using modern technologies.
