The European Union (EU) will not promote the idea of lowering the ceiling on Russian oil prices amid the worsening situation in the Middle East. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on June 20, citing European diplomats.

Initially, it was proposed to reduce the marginal price of Russian oil from $60 to $45 per barrel. However, the plan was suspended due to rising tensions between Iran and Israel, which created risks of a spike in energy prices.

"The idea of lowering the price ceiling probably won't be accepted due to the international situation in the Middle East and volatility," one of the diplomats said.

According to him, at the G7 summit this week, the participating countries agreed to refrain from making a final decision.

"The prices were pretty close to the limit. But now prices are going up and down, the situation is too volatile at the moment," the source added.

On June 17, it was reported that US President Donald Trump opposes the EU's desire to lower the ceiling on Russian oil prices. According to Maria Shagina, an expert on sanctions at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the unification plan will not be effective without the support of the United States.
